Parents here in America are happy to help their child get settled into college and they usually become involved but not intrusive.

We learned that phrase yesterday right? To be involved but not intrusive 이란 영어표현은 어제 배운 표현이죠? ~함께하지만/~참여하지만 지나치게 간섭하지 않는다, 혹은 참견하지 않는다라는 뜻입니다.

미국 학부모들은 자녀들이 대학교에 진학하는 것에 대해 적극적으로 지원하는 편입니다. 제가 Washington DC에 있는 조지 워싱턴 대학교 Orientation에서 Tom을 만났습니다.

I met a parent named Tom, who flew in with her daughter from Chicago, Illinois to help her get all stocked up for the beginning of the school year.

일리노이 주의 시카고에 사는 톰은 딸과 함께 비행기를 타고 워싱톤 대학에 도착하자마자 쇼핑을 하러 갔다고 합니다. Tom은 자녀가 새학기를 시작하면서 필요한 물건들을 많이 사다 놓았다고 하네요.

오늘의 영어 표현은: Stock up / Get all stocked up. 제가 Tom과 함께 대화한 것을 먼저 들려 드리겠습니다. Listen carefully!

Jen: Pita chips, bread, toilet paper, umbrella! Did you go shopping for your daughter?
Tom: Yes we did! We went and got her all stocked up for the beginning of the school year. I have an older one who is in school, 2 years now, so we are a little bit familiar with the process.

Pita chips 과자, bread 빵, toilet paper 화장지, umbrella 우산 등 많은 필요한 물건이 쇼핑가방 안에 있더라구요. 그래서 제가 톰에게 물었습니다. “Did you go shopping for your daughter?” "톰씨는 딸이 학교 시작하면서 필요한 음식과 물건들을 샀어요?"

“네 맞습니다. 자녀가 새 학기를 시작하면서 필요한 물건들을 미리 많이 샀습니다. 큰 애가 하나 있는데 그 아이는 벌써 대학을 보내서 이런 일을 하는 게 익숙하네요” 라고 대답하더라고요.

오늘의 영어 표현은: Stock up / Get all stocked up 이죠?
Stock up 하면 ~을 많이 사다 / ~을 많이 사서 비축하다, 채우다라는 뜻입니다.
그래서 Get all stocked up 하면 ~을 모두 다 많이 사다 놓다 또는 비축하다라는 뜻입니다.

Tom은 자녀가 새 학기를 시작하기 전에 필요한 물건들을 많이 사다 놓았다고 하네요. “We went and got her all stocked up for the beginning of the school year.” 라고 했죠? Let’s listen to the conversation again.
