With new devices and smartphones coming out every day in the mobile market it can be difficult deciding whether to upgrade or purchase a new phone.

요즘 기술이 계속 좋아지면서 새로운 손전화들이 많이 나오고 있는데요. 덕분에 고객들은 여러 가지 제품 가운데 뭘 사야 할지 고민하기도 합니다. 마이크는 새로운 손전화를 살까말까 고민하고 있답니다. 새 제품을 갖고는 싶은데 지금 쓰는 게 아무런 문제가 없기 때문이라는 거죠.

그럼 제가 Mike 와 나눈 대화 내용을 먼저 들어보시겠습니다. 오늘의 영어표현은 To be on the fence 이죠. Listen carefully!

Mike: Have you seen the new iPhone 5?
Jen: No.
Mike: I am like on the fence about it. I have an iPhone 4 and part of me really wants to upgrade but the other half is like…I have a phone, it works just fine.

Mike 는 저에게 Have you seen the new iPhone 5? 라고 물어봤습니다. 새로 나온 아이폰5를 봤냐는 거죠?

그러면서 마이크는 그걸 살까말까 고민스럽다며 “I am on the fence about it”이라고 말하더라고요. 왜냐하면 Mike 가 지금 쓰고 있는 iPhone4 도 작동이 잘 되고 있으니까요.

저는 그 얘기를 듣고 마이크에게 고민하지 말라는 뜻으로 “You don’t need to be on the fence”라고 말했습니다. 그러면서 제가 쓰고 있는 손전화를 추천해줬죠.
