제가 지난주에 말씀드렸죠? It’s back to school time! 곧 학생들이 학교로 돌아갈 때입니다. 미국에서는 8월 말 혹은 9월 초에 새로운 학기가 시작된다고 했죠?

이번 주에는 워싱턴 D.C.에 있는 조지 워싱턴대학교가 새로운 학기를 시작합니다. 그래서 지난 주말에 학생들과 학생들의 부모님들을 위한 Orientation이 있었습니다.

Orientation (오리엔테이션)은 welcoming information session 새학기가 시작하기 전에 이를 환영하는 설명회 같은 것인데요. 학생들과 부모님들은 토요일 아침 일찍부터 필요한 정보를 받고, campus tour 신입생들은 캠퍼스를 구경하고, 학교의 서점에 가서 교과서도 사는 날입나다.

그리고 학교 기숙사에 Move-in 이사들어가는 학생들은 새로운 roommate, 방을 함께 쓰는 사람, 룸메이트를 만날 수 있고, 학교 직원들과 대학교, 또는 대학원의 학장도 만날 수 있습니다.

It’s a pretty exciting day for many students and parents. 그래서 미국 대학교의 Orientation날과 first week of school에서 쓸 수 있는 다양한 영어표현들을 배워보겠습니다.

Jen: So, how do parents get involved? Do you see parents coming over during orientation week to help get their child settled in?
Debbie: Parents do come with their students during orientation week. They help out. They help set up the room and they take them shopping and do things like that.

조지 워싱턴대학교에서 일하시는 Debbie씨는 Office of Parent Services의 부원장입니다. 24년동안 대학생들과 부모님들에게 학교생활에 잘 적응하기 위한 일을 도우신 분입니다.

제가 "How do parents get involved?" "부모님들은 오리엔테이션 날에 어떻게 학생들을 도와주죠?" 라고 물어봤더니 Debbie는 "They help set up the room and they take them shopping and do things like that." "기숙사에 잘 살 수 있도록 준비하는 것을 돕고 다른 필요한 제품들을 사러 갑니다." 라고 대답하더라구요.

오늘의 영어 표현은: Help set up ~ 이죠? Help는 돕다, 거들다라는 뜻이고, set up은 ~준비를 하거나, 설치하다, ~세우다라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 help set up something(~) …하면 ~준비를 하거나 설치하는 것을 돕다라는 뜻입니다.
